“To Your Mark, Eyes Set, Go!”
Pastor Holden Tyner
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Hebrews 12:1-2 ESV
1. The greats of the faith inspire us.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,”
“Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ.”
I Corinthians 11:1 NKJV
📝 Our calling and purpose is far bigger and greater than ourselves
2. We have to get race ready daily.
“let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely,”
What clings close?
“Do not quench the Spirit.” I Thessalonians 5:19 NKJV
📝 It is a daily, even moment by moment choice to lay aside those weights and sins so that the Holy Spirit can cling close.
📝 Running this race that God has for us requires us to walk in step with the Holy Spirit.
3. Keep your eyes on Jesus.
“and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
“and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
“looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
“And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid." And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."”
Matthew 14:25-33 ESV
📝 When we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, we will keep going! When we fix our eyes on the things around us, we quickly begin to sink.
“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.””
Matthew 11:28-30 NLT
“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
Philippians 4:13 ESV
“Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.”
Hebrews 2:1 ESV
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
